ALBUM REVIEW: David Banner: The Greatest Story Ever Told
David Banner: The Greatest Story Ever Told
(2.5 out of 5 stars)

Both singles, ‘9mm’ and ‘Get Like Me’, have left their mark on hip-hop so far this year. Outside of those two hits, there isn’t much substance or lyrical creativity on the record as a whole. The stand-out track seems to be “So Long” which is a political commentary that would have been much more controversial if it were released as a single and came before Killer Mike’s “Pressure”. In fact, it is so similar to “Pressure” that it lost my interest halfway through because it is done about half as well and with very little actually being said about our current political landscape. Plus, following “So Long” are songs like “Suicide Doors” and “Fuck You Hoes” in which he contradicts every positive message littered throughout his political tyrant. With guest appearances from Chris Brown, Lil’ Wayne, Akon, Snoop Dogg, Chamillionare, Jazze Pha, and Jim Jones it is apparent that even David Banner knew his rhymes alone were not enough to sustain an entire album. Banner is one of hip-hop’s best producers around, but his flows are average at best and lack a certain something to keep this record from being anything but forgettable.
